A multi-day event, the Be Golden Empowerment Conference provides networking, mentorship, education, and toolkits to inspire and reignite passion, purpose, and service. The 2022 conference includes impactful speakers, dynamic and interactive workshops, energetic sessions, powerful keynote presentations, after parties, and more. Proceeds Benefit Girls Inc. Girls Inc. of Monroe County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. They equip girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and look toward a future where girls and women are empowered and part of an equitable society. Our Keynotes
Ellise Smith
Ellise Antoinette Smith is from Detroit, Michigan, with a research focus on the experiences of bodies that identify as fat. With an interdisciplinary focus, Smith uses photography (#VisualActivism), podcasting, spoken word poetry, and social media as a catalyst to center these narratives.
As doctoral student in the Urban Education Studies program at IUPUI, Smith dedicates her scholarship to creating celebratory spaces for the marginalized identities that she holds using frameworks such as Black Feminist Thought, Sense of Belonging, Intersectionality, and Critical Race Theory. She aims to ensure the work and narratives around bigger bodies are included in academia while challenging the dominant ideologies around body image acceptance.
Smith centers her work within the sector of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as she pulls from her experiences working with first-generation, low-income students, racial equity, and eradicating injustices for underrepresented populations.

We love our volunteers! We’re looking for enthusiastic people to donate their time to make the 2022 Be Golden Empowerment Conference a smashing success! Is that you?
Duties include: speaker and attendee registration, session runner, photographer, social media documentarian, merchandise sales, tech support, event set up, and event tear down. Volunteers get free access to the keynote presentations, a 2022 branded t-shirt, and access to conference sessions when you’re not volunteering. All volunteers will complete an orientation before the event.
